Beverley
Repeatedly named in The Sunday Times Best places to live Guide; Beverley is a market town in East Yorkshire. The stunning Georgian town is tucked away with its closest neighbour Hull a 30-minute drive away. Known for its famous minster, glorious green spaces, historic inns and quirky cafes, the town is buzzing with culture and has a distinctly upmarket feel with many acclaimed hotels and restaurants. With two weekly markets, plenty of independent shops, a racecourse and its own fringe festival there’s always something going on. Beverley has many desirable properties with urban living locations to the North of the town, as well as characterful older homes near the minster and country living at its finest in several lovely villages just out of town. As Beverley rises in popularity so do the house prices; in 2019, Beverley saw a significant rise in property prices. The average asking price rose by 8% in 2020 to £252,901. Ripon
Based in North Yorkshire, 30-minutes away from Harrogate, Ripon is ideally located right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. One of its main attractions is the incredible architecture of the cathedral but there is plenty more to do, with people from neighbouring towns and villages flocking to Ripon to make the most of its views and culture. With a thriving food and drink scene, you don’t need to walk far to find a fantastic pub, such as Appletons or The Royal Oak. Ripon’s streets ooze charm and character, meaning it’s often chosen as a location for tv filming, so you can expect plenty of picturesque photo opportunities. The city boasts a thriving housing market with detached and semi-detached four- and five-bedroom homes a common find. The average property price in Ripon currently stands at £270,586, a 9% increase from 2019.
Roundhay
Roundhay has become known as one of Leeds’s most exclusive suburbs. Just a five-minute drive into the city centre, with great transport links, the suburb itself has plenty to offer in terms of thriving bars, restaurants and events. Obviously, the main attraction to Roundhay is the sprawling 700-acre park, which offers masses of open space on your doorstep and has even been host to outdoor concerts such as Ed Sheeran. There’s plenty of properties that overlook the park if it’s views that you’re after, but of course these come with a steep price tag. There’s a host of independent shops and deli’s, stylish pubs like Deer Park and popular restaurants such as San Carlo Flying Pizza. The affluent area is unsurprisingly one of the most expensive areas in Leeds, with some stunning converted properties you can get style and character in Roundhay. The average price of a property in Roundhay is £294,225, up only 1% from 2019.
Saltaire
Saltaire is a Victorian model village in Shipley, near Bradford in West Yorkshire. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, Saltaire is known for its Salts Mill which is now home to world class art displays. The river Aire runs through the village and it has many picturesque walking and cycle routes including the start of a 90-mile walk known as the Dales Highway. Historically a working-class old mill village, Saltaire boasts immaculately preserved old cottages and is easily commutable to Bradford and Leeds. The average price of a house in Saltaire is significantly lower than a lot of the locations on this list at £182,547 with terrace houses the most popular style of house to purchase.
Ranmoor
Ranmoor is an affluent suburb of Sheffield located in the Fulwood ward of the city. The suburb was mostly developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it features a number of large houses that were built for the city's steel magnates. Nowadays, Ranmoor has a thriving community, with plenty of good schools, pubs and bars. The leafy streets are lined with large detached and semi-detached homes, however there are a high number of flats available, with the area being popular with young professionals. The average price of a property in Ranmoor is £363,438, which is at the higher end of the scale for homes in Yorkshire.
York
York is famed for its history, a popular destination with tourists, the city has plenty to see and do. With 14th century Shambles, the river Ouse, strong Viking roots, the Minster and city walls there is certainly some exploring to be done. From city centre apartments to Georgian houses and Victorian terraces – York has it all. The village of Fulford is often singled out as the place to live in York, as it’s leafy and lush with great schools. The majority of sales in York during the last year were semi-detached properties, the average house price this year is up 2% to £280,292.
Harrogate
Located in North Yorkshire, Harrogate is home to historic spas, a vibrant mix of independent and high street shops as well as many trendy and award-winning restaurants, bars and pubs. There’s also lots of greenspace such as The Stray and Valley Park. Harrogate also boasts excellent state and private schooling making it popular with families. Houses here are at the higher end of the scale with the average home costing £352,878. A long-term favourite on some ‘best places to live in the UK’ lists, the town has recently been left off after being accused of pricing itself out of the market.
Howardian Hills
Located between the Yorkshire Wolds, the North York Moors National Park and the Vale of York, the Howardian Hills is an area made up of picturesque villages such as Slingsby, Hovingham, Nunnington, Husthwaite, Crayke and Terrington. 2020 saw the Howardian Hills make its first appearance in The Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide – by being named the most desirable postcode in the North. With far reaching views and intimate valleys, there’s plenty to be seen such as Castle Howard, National Trust Nunnington Hall and Helmsley walled garden. As well as sights to see there’s the foodie capital of Malton and Michelin-starred gastropub The Black Swan at Oldstead. The average house price in the area varies as the hills cover a number of different villages, for example a home in Helmsley will cost you £360,018 on average whereas a home in Slingsby could cost you as little as £193,625.
